Lesson 1: Tones and First Greeting

Introduced the four tones, nǐ hǎo, and wǒ jiào Henry as the first pronunciation-focused lesson.

Lesson 1 established the first speaking targets for this enrollment: mā má mǎ mà, nǐ hǎo 你好, nín hǎo 您好, and wǒ jiào Henry 我叫 Henry. Focus points: keep tones short and deliberate, hear the difference between first/second/third/fourth tone, and notice that nǐ hǎo is commonly realized with third-tone sandhi in connected speech. No direct spoken sample from Henry was captured in this lesson note yet, so no individual mistake log or mastery score was recorded.

Drills

  • Repeat nǐ hǎo and nín hǎo, keeping hǎo low then rising.
