Teacher Response

Next, do the first speaking drill. Read these aloud in order:

  1. mā má mǎ mà
  2. nǐ hǎo 你好
  3. nín hǎo 您好
  4. wǒ jiào Henry 我叫 Henry

Correction:

  • nǐ hǎo is written with two third tones, but in normal speech the first one shifts, so it sounds closer to ní hǎo.
  • jiào is fourth tone. Make it fall clearly.
  • is third tone. Do not make it flat.

Say this mini exchange three times:

  • Nǐ hǎo.
  • Nǐ hǎo. Wǒ jiào Henry.

Summary: Lesson 1 is tones plus your first greeting and self-introduction.
