Dojo Kun
Blancke lists the five Shotokan Dojo Kun:
- Strive for completion and perfection of character.
- Be faithful and protect the way of truth.
- Put maximum effort into everything.
- Respect others and etiquette.
- Refrain from impetuous or violent behaviour.
Niju Kun
Treat Funakoshi’s twenty guiding principles as reflection prompts. Important
ideas include:
- karate begins and ends with courtesy
- never strike first
- mental attitude is more important than technique
- karate is lifelong
- kata should be firm while combat should be fluid
